Art & Design

Our Intent

At Musbury Primary School, our intent is firmly aligned to the aims of the national curriculum for Art & Design.

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Our Implementation

We plan and teach art & design as a rolling programme. For Class 1 we have a 2-year plan and for Class 2 we have a 4-year plan. Our curriculum overviews identify when each area of the art & design national curriculum is taught. Leaders have made decisions about what unit of knowledge is taught when and our progression document highlights the small steps in skills for each year group. Each unit places an emphasis on progressing the children' skills when using a different medium, regardless at what year they are when they meet each unit of learning.

Where possible, we enrich the children's learning with trips, visits or we invite visitors in to school, so that the children have the opportunity to be inspired by people who are experts in their field. We have recently worked with the community on a sewing project, which was involved making flowers using material. The finished piece was displayed proudly in the Church, for the whole community to enjoy.

The Impact

Children’s knowledge and skills in art & design, covered in a unit of work, is gauged through children’s ongoing work, the quality of their answers to 1:1 and whole class questions and through assessment tasks.
